Overview
Dr. P. Abdul Salam is a professor of sustainable energy transition and Dean of the School of Environment,Resources and Development (SERD) at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in Thailand. With a wealth of experience and expertise in the field of biomass, bioenergy, biofuel, and biogas; waste-to-energy and heat recovery systems; renewable and sustainable energy systems; energy efficiency in buildings and industries; carbon capture and sequestration; climate change mitigation; and the water-energy-food nexus, Dr. Abdul Salam has made significant contributions to the research and development of above areas.
Throughout his academic career, Dr. Abdul Salam has excelled as an educator, researcher, and mentor. He has directly supervised numerous doctoral dissertations and master’s theses, guiding students in their pursuit of knowledge and research excellence. His dedication to scholarly pursuits is evident through his extensive publication record, which includes six books, eight book chapters, and around 70 internationally reviewed journal articles and conference papers.
Dr. Abdul Salam’s outstanding contributions have been recognized and celebrated within the academic community. He was honored with the Thailand Frontier Researcher Award in Engineering in 2016, and he received the distinguished researcher award from AIT for two consecutive years, 2018 and 2019.
Research and innovation are at the core of Dr. Abdul Salam’s professional journey. He has successfully submitted around fifty research proposals to international and private organizations, securing funding for various projects. With a remarkable track record, he has been involved in 48 sponsored research projects, serving as a Principal Investigator for 17 projects and as a Co-Principal Investigator for 31 projects. His expertise and leadership have also extended to organizing conferences, seminars, and workshops, where he shares his knowledge and engages with fellow researchers.
Beyond his academic pursuits, Dr. Abdul Salam has played pivotal roles in administrative and management positions at AIT. His contributions have spanned across departments and programs, including serving as Academic Senate Chair, Head of the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Thematic Leader for Low Carbon and Sustainable Production and Consumption Technologies and Management, and Program Chair of Sustainable Energy Transition Program.
Dr. Abdul Salam is an active member of several professional associations, including the World Bioenergy Association (WBA), the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA), the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He has also been appointed as a member of the Council of Engineers for the Energy Transition (CEET), an esteemed high-level body advising the United Nations Secretary-General on achieving net zero emissions by 2050. His membership in CEET further exemplifies his commitment to advancing sustainable energy and environmental solutions.
